Africa Lures ("we", "us") respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use africalures.com or order from us, why we need it, who we share it with, and your rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

What we collect and why

How your order is sent: the details you type at checkout are not stored on our website. Your own browser puts them into a WhatsApp message, which you then send to us. We never ask for card or banking details on the website.

Your cart: the lures in your cart are saved in your own browser so they are still there when you come back. This never leaves your device.

We process your information because it is needed to carry out your order (POPIA section 11(1)(b)), because the law requires us to keep business records (section 11(1)(c)), or, for website statistics, because you agreed to it (section 11(1)(a)).

We do not sell, rent or trade your information, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not send marketing messages.

Who we share it with

  • WhatsApp (Meta Platforms): your order and messages reach us through WhatsApp.
  • Couriers and PUDO: your name, phone number and delivery details, only so they can deliver your parcel.
  • Vercel Inc.: hosts our website. It handles the technical data every visit creates (such as IP addresses) to serve pages and keep the site secure.
  • Google: website statistics through Google Analytics, only if you accepted cookies.
  • Anyone the law requires us to share it with, for example SARS.

Information sent outside South Africa

Some of the services above are run from other countries: Vercel (our web host) and Google are based in the United States, and WhatsApp's servers are located around the world. This means some of your information may be processed outside South Africa.

We only use providers that are bound by data protection terms (including the EU's Standard Contractual Clauses) to protect personal information to a standard similar to POPIA, as section 72 of POPIA requires. Where that does not apply, the transfer is needed to carry out your order or you have agreed to it.

How long we keep it

We keep order records for 5 years, because tax law requires it. Google keeps website statistics for no more than 14 months. Other messages are deleted when we no longer need them.

Your rights

Under POPIA you have the right to:

  • ask what personal information we hold about you and get a copy of it,
  • have it corrected if it is wrong or out of date,
  • have it deleted, unless the law requires us to keep it,
  • object to us using it (section 11(3)), and
  • withdraw your cookie consent at any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page.

To use any of these rights, email info@africalures.com or message us on WhatsApp. We may ask you to confirm who you are first. We reply within 30 days, and it is free.

Keeping it safe

The whole website is served over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. Order details are only seen by the people at Africa Lures who handle orders, and we only keep what we need. If your information is ever lost, stolen or accessed by someone who shouldn't have it, we will tell you and the Information Regulator as soon as reasonably possible, as POPIA requires.
